Complementary therapy/ herbs/ fish oils while taking Dasatinib

Hi,

I would like to know a little bit more about some of products like herbs/ or supplements used in combination with the medication I take for my Leukaemia. I was diagnosed with CML early last year, and as I can imagine for everyone, for me it came as a big shock which I am still trying to come to terms and adjust. I have always been a very active person, very busy life style and only by coincidence after having one of my COVID jabs, that I develop some botched patches in my skin, and was feeling quite unwell that I took myself to A&E and after many tests, I was told that I needed to remain in Hospital as I had to speak to one of the Heamatologist about my abnormal blood cells. I still never understood why they meant with that, then to find out by one of the consultants what their suspicions were. I have suffered and dealt with chronic back pain for many years, and also have been dealing with severe anxiety, but never understood quite well what was the meaning of the results, until the mention the C word. I then started a treatment with Imatinib and after six months, I entered what they call remission stage, so I was quite confident that things would remain as such, then after Christmas this year, I started to have some sort of discomfort in my tong and small white blisters, I obviously started to panic, and had biopsy to check the nature of it, I was initially told by my consultant that it wasn’t related to the medication, but maybe because I like to take herbal teas, maybe that was having some effects, after the biopsy, results came back and there was nothing cancerous found, they advised me to go back to my Heamatologist and explain this and to check once again if there was anything to do with the meds. I did so, and was seen by a Junior Dr that time, who was quite helpful and did mentioned that he would try to check some if my organs, as INE of the results( my liver test) was coming up a little higher than usual. They checked again and my consultant was notified of this, then I was admitted into hospital, for further investigations, as my liver test went up the roof, they found out that I seemed to have some sort of inflammation in my liver, and the liver consultant did contact my Heamatologist consultant and explained that this could of been caused by tge Imatinib. After several investigations and biopsy of my liver, they decided to stop the Imatinib and see if that would help, they also gave me some cortisol meds, which worked well with tge healing, and the spots and discomfort on my tongue disappeared. After few months, I was then clear and my liver enzymes went back to normal, I have been put on another medication which it’s calked Disatinib, and they started me on 50grms, with the view of going up gradually to 100grms. Am sorry for my long story, but while dealing with my back and chest pains( which they trying to diagnose as Costal Condritis), I currently try to manage with my pain by taking paracetamols and doing stretching and yoga, in the meantime I want to know if it’s safe for me to take some of the fish oils, as I used have them before I was diagnosed to help me manage the pain. I then read up about it’s not recommended to take Omega 3 fish oils while taking the medication for the leukaemia, it’s quite confusing, and sets off my anxiety as I don’t know what to do. My consultant says that usually just better to keep a healthy diet, but they don’t have really much advise on pain management, other than asking me to get back to my GP for alternative pain release. I would like to use alternative herbs/ supplements that might help me with pain/ inflammation. I have also been told that some of these symptoms can be related to menopause as I am 50 now, but no one seems to give me a definite answer. I am a bit worry as well as to when I go into tge higher dosis of the medication it might causes inflammation in my liver again. I do get a mild discomfort in my tongue at the moment( roughness) and a bit sensitive, but so far I haven’t had any blisters.
thank you

Hi, why don’t you try omega3-6-9 seed oil blend instead of fish oil blend .. plus fish oil may be put some stress on your liver . I am taking that for dry eye condition. I feel sick with any kind of seafood / fish oil. I developed this weird seafood allergy just prior to being diagnosed.
Also, I am assuming you have reduced carb intake for the sake of your liver.

when did you get diagnosed ? How many days after your jab ? I am asking since I was diagnosed after my 3rd covid vaccine. I literally woke up the next day with swollen feet . A mild gout like flare up . Got blood work done about 2-3 weeks after and my wbcs were through the roof .

Hi,

thank you for the suggestion, I was diagnosed with the condition in May last year. It was 3 days after I had my COVID jab, as I needed it to have it due to my work nature. It was quite strange as in previous months( November 2020), I had blood tests done as I am always iron deficiency. They checked all my bloods and nothing flagged up. I asked this to my consultant, but she just said, that she couldn’t say it was due to the Vaccine, but she couldn’t explain how my bloods were fine before. All she could do was to help now with the condition. I have recently developed also a bit of sore dry eye on my left eye, that it gets worse towards the night time. I have been taking some omega 3 fish oil, from Pharmepa, it states the these fish oils are pure EPA only, it appears to be super absorbent, free from PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. I only trying to see if I can find something to help me with my back pain, as I have been in an waiting list to see a consultant at the pain clinic for almost a year now, and still waiting, before I knew I had leukaemia, I always took fish oils as it helped me with my joints and aches. Now it’s hard to just take anything I was used to as I am scared that interferes with the medication.I am not a fan of taking medication for pain, I usually like to try alternatives less abrasive to my organs, specially since I have had the issue with my liver enzymes, but to be honest, I am new to all this, and I want to be able to find a bit more of stability and something to help me with the pain. For the sickness I tend to have ginger tea, with cinnamon stick and cloves, like 1 cup of tea after my breakfast and it seems to help me. Where will I be able to find these Omega 3 seed oils from? The ones you mention earlier on?, thanks fir your reply.

I found the Omega3-6-9 Seed oil blend on Amazon . It is made from flax seed, evening primrose, canola, black currant seed and pumpkin seed.

Apart from that, I take vitamin D(I am slightly deficient).

Tumeric/Curcumin for inflammation( I have recently developed back pain even though I am physically active and had no prior back issues). I also take it to reduce my ferritin levels . It has been pretty high for a few years now .

and a vitamin b complex with extra B12 ( I have pretty bad peripheral neuropathy due to dasatinib )… the supplements don’t really help for this. But i take it anyway.

I also have really bad dasatinib induced hypoglycaemia but I don’t take anything for that ..

doesn’t the oncology department have a pharmacist? He/she should be able to check which supplements may interact with your treatment.

Thank you for the info, yeah I have a pharmacist but I have not asked them about taking the omega 3 supplements, I will do as I will be going next week. I have been in observation regularly as they they are monitoring my liver enzymes, I am finding that while on 50mg of Dasatinib, I am much better coping with my fatigue and hot flushes, but still. Pretty bad, I just try to cope how ever posible I can. I also have been a very active person all my life, amd always have dealt with severe pain, which they seem to think it’s a condition calked costal condritis, but no one has properly diagnosed it.yeah I take turmeric in my food, and have some herbal teas as well. I am just conscious about developing liver issues when trying to find something to help with my pain.

I found this guy on YouTube ( Dr.Eric Berg )… he seems to have good tips on healthy liver practices. May be check out some of his videos…

Thank you so much for your support, I really appreciate it. I was going to ask you as well if it’s not too much trouble, if you could let me know the name of the Omega 3-6-9 oils capsules you told me before, as I was looking on Amazon, but they don’t seem to show a combination of the seeds oils together combined into INE tablet, rather shows you different types/brands with only 1 ingredient. Thank you for the video links, I really appreciate it.

This is what I use ....

https://www.amazon.ca/Now-Omega-3-6-9-1000mg-Softgels/dp/B008X8IVOI/ref=...

Just go on amazon and search, "omega 3 6 9 seed oil blend supplements".

Hi,

thank you for the info, I will give that a try, thank you, the videos on YouTube were quite helpful and informative. Since I have been diagnosed with this condition, it’s been a big task for me to get used to eat a better and more balanced diet. My consultant just tells me to eat well, but there is no much clear info to give new patients on better/ more healthy diet, I think, I just have to look it up myself, and try not to get confused with all different info that there is out there, or looking into this type of forum where there are other people with more experience/ understanding on how to look after themselves/ living with leukaemia.
Thanks once again

regards

How are the liver enzymes? Any improvement after the supplements ( I know it’s early to say but just checking either way ) . Are you feeling slightly better atleast ?
