For the ladies (ovarian, period issues)

Categories:

Hi! I have CML already for 2 years and since then have been on Imatinib 400mg. I am currently 36 years young and have 2 children. Overall, I have been doing pretty well, however, I noticed that my periods got shorter and lighter and approximately 6 month ago I started to experience issues with ovaries. It started with bad pain and 2 ovary cysts as well as some fluid in my pelvis. As those cysts didn't look good my gyno sent me to do CA125 which came back normal. 3 months later when I had to do checkup my gyno told that my ovaries looks multifollicular even though it was right after my period and it shouldn't be the case. She said that it is most likely from Imatinib but she doesn't have any experience or knowledge about that drug or CML. Last month I went to another gyno which specializes in oncology because I am still experiencing pelvic pain almost all the time but its the worst during ovulation (its difficult even walk for several days). He found that I might have polyp in uterus (this needs to be checked one more time), which was a surprise for me, because my uterus was completely clear last two ultrasounds, and he suggested to insert hormonal coil for ovarian issues. I am very reluctant to that idea, I have never had one and am afraid of the interaction with Imatinib, however, I can't live with constant pain. My hemotologist 3 months ago just briefly said that we still need to check on this but that I might experience hormonal imbalance from Imatinib. She told me that it's not allowed to use hormonal contraception. So... I am very confused right now. I am reading everything I can find but still am missing input on these questions:

1) have any of you experienced your period getting shorted (not heavier) from Imatinib?

2) any experience with ovarian cysts, ovarian pain, multifollicular ovaries from Imatinib?

3) can person taking Imatinib insert hormonal IUD?

I will highly appreciate any input!

Hi.

One of the questions i can answer is that i did have a mirena coil fitted whilst on immatinib with full approval of my hematologist. It was only removed recently as it had outlived its value. I had mine fitted for mid cycle bleeding which it dealt with completely. I have had polys but nothing out of the ordinary for someone of my age and was told most women get them.  It has never been suggested to me that hormone therapy of any form is wrong with immatinib.

All the best

Thank you so much for sharing this info! I will talk to my doctors about this.
