coughs and colds when taking Glivec/Dasatanib

Brian has had cml for 14 months now and in that time has had various coughs/colds - more than usual and they seem to be worse than he would normally have. He has had his flu jag. At present another bad cough on the go that makes him choke when the coughing starts. He is over the worst now but we wondered if this is due to diminished immune system.
Glad to hear of any responses to this
Thanks
Chris

I am with Brian

Just finished another cold - came upon me very quickly

As I am on glivec could not have any over the counter drugs to assist with flu / cold symptoms

Used honey - lemon drinks, hot water bottle and went to bed.

Yes - I believe it is that your immune system is low and you can pick up any of the viruses quickly.

Do you think it may have been from the flu jab

Sue

Hello
Coughs and colds are par for the course, especially at this time of year. No connection with flu' jab, but experience over the years have shown me that the more you keep away from heavily 'peopled' areas, (shopping etc., pubs, clubs, public transport) the better you will be. Diminished Wbc and Nfl's are probably to blame, so accept what your body can take, and stay away from people at this time of the year. Sad but I have found this to be the only prevention. As I remember air conditioning is also a major problem to we people who are having fun with cml. I actually gave up a Board position (which I enjoyed) because of the problems I was having with their air-con. So be warned.
Have fun and keep smiling (and coughing)
Keith

Sue, who's told you that you can't have any over the counter medication, and what was the reason?

I have been on Glivec for 9 months. I had the flu jab at the start of the winter. I have not had a cold since last May and that was before I was dx (my husband had the cold at the same time and he was more ill than I was). I attended Highland Games, Inverness and Edinburgh Tattoos in the summer, ceilidhs, concerts, burns suppers etc. over the winter. I did wonder about air conditioning on the plane but I travelled to Canada and back without picking up any virus or colds.
Maybe I have a good immune system.

been on Imatinib for over 12 months, I have not sufferred any serious colds or flus at all in that time, even though my family have been ill at times.

I put it down (unscientifically) to my body concentrating on others things that it doesn't have time to have a long deal with an illeness so sorts it out quickly,

I have been on Glivec for nearly 3 years now. Each year I get a flu jab in the beginning of winter and each year I get a cough not long after the jab. I don't know if it is related or not.

Debbie

any slight cold I get I seem to have for no more than 24-48 hrs and then feel fine afterwards

I have been taking Glivec for almost two months and have also been affected by flu and coughing. The coughing was reduced (but not eliminated) after I stopped taken Alopurinol. I work at high altitude, in a dry environment sharing computer consoles with many people. It is not only me who is sick often, but it appears that my flu symptoms last longer.
