New baby! and broken bones...

Hi

Forgot to mention in my previous postings, my wife gave birth to a beautiful daughter 6 months ago. When she was conceived, I had been on Glivec for around 5 months. We were warned of the possible risks but weighed up the pros and cons and went ahead anyway. All's well so far and she's absolutely gorgeous!

The last year has indeed been eventful. As well as getting married in April, I came off my scooter in July last year and broke my arm badly. It was a major op to fix it up, involving a large piece of metalwork and a dozen screws. My onc was not concerned about the op in the slightest and the bone seems to have healed up fine. As far as I'm aware, no additional CML / Glivec precautions were taken.

All the best everyone!

Regards

Kenny

first off congrats about the baby :)

last week I went in for surgery for my broken nose (see a previous posting) and this under a general anesthetic. THere where no concerns from anyone with regard the Imatinib for this after various discussions.

However about 30 mins after coming round from the general I passed out, blood pressure dropped to 60 and heart beat at 38 apprently. I don't recall any of this and they told me at the time they thought I had some sort of seizure as I tensed up, (my calfs ached for a few days afterwards), but later just said it was a reaction to the general. They where unsure if was due to the imatinib, cml or just one of those things.

Knocked me out of my stride for 3 days afterwards as well.

Operation

I had an emergency hysterectomy - they took me off glivec for 14 days only - bloods taken twice a day and no change in bloods at all. Felt fantastic - like a giant detox.

When I went back on glivec started at 400mg for 2 weeks and then 600mg which is my current dose - that is the only time that I have gone off glivec

By the way - Baby congratulations - I think glivec must be the deciding factor of having baby girls. There has been a spate of baby girls in Australia just born - the girls all went on
inteferon and when babies born back on glivec - however not breast feeding - all the babies are fine.
Maybe a study to be done - glivec if you want a bub being a little girl. Babies are great - so hugs to you and yours.

Yeah, my onc has talked about doing some kind of study, based around fertility analysis. Since I started the drug, the sperm count has dropped dramatically . I think 2 kids is probably enough though! It's not only the Glivec that makes me tired...although, thankfully, ours are good sleepers ;-)

Sounds like a painful experience Rob - ouch! Hopefully just one of those things.

also, when I tried to find info on Glivec pregnancies some 18mths ago, info was really sketchy as I remember. I managed to get some info from Novartis in the end. Since then, I've heard of several sucessful, normal births. Would be good if the current information could be collated somehow for those contemplating children...

I could probably somehow scan and post the information I received from Novartis, if anyone's interested - ?

Kenny

Kenny

Yes that would be very useful - any info - I am sure as time goes on -there maybe other people who would benefit from your information

Sue

Novartis are currently compiling data on Glivec and pregnancy. As soon as I hear from them I will post here.
the data is only on women and pregnancy as the issues do not seem to be as relevant with men fathering children. There have been quite a few babies born to 'Glivec' dads.

Congratulations Kenny on the birth of your lovely daughter... commiserations on your broken arm.
