cml and teeth

Hi.
My husban Brian 64 is the cml patient and was dx 18 months ago. No longer on glivec as intolerant, transferred to Dasatanib 8 months ago and it is easier although there is no escaping the debilitating exhaustion and stomach upset. However on a different note his teeth are starting to deteriorate and break.
So glad if we could have other patients experience of this and info.
Chris

Hello Chris and Brian

I have had terrible problems with my teeth since I have had CML, diagnosed in 2001. For some time now they have been in need of constant attention. Although most Docs say its not CML related my dentist is positive its a Leukaemia related thing. My problems have continued now I am on Tasigna. I have been very lucky to find an excellent dentist who is striving to manage my teeth and help me 'hold on' to them a bit longer!

Sorry to hear that Brian is gleevec intolerant, and hope that Dasatanib works for him.

Hi all,

I'm 27 and was diagnosed at 24 although I'm not on any medication as I had a successful transplant 2.5 years ago. A year or so before diagnosis 4 of my back teeth on the bottom started to crumble away which has left me with 4 gold caps. The rest of my teeth are really good and my friends often acuse me of having veneers as I've always looked after them!

I asked one of the haematologists at Kings about this and they said there was no link proven. I also asked my dentist and he just said it could be a possibility although he was unsure as he had never spoken to anyone in my situation with the same problem.

Has anyone heard of a link between CML and teeth problems?

Regards,

Martyn

Hi,
Rio had his 8 remaining 'baby' teeth out last November because they were all in a bad state of repair. It left him with too many gaps to be able to eat properly! Dental consultant had the cheek to imply that I had indulged him with sweets because he was ill! I was furious as he had had regular dental checks and no problems identified prior to CML diagnosis. Adult teeth slow to appear. Will be interesting to see how his teeth fare now he has had BMT. (Still in isolation, bit of an infection bubbling away, but neutrophils gradually improving.) Have asked about whether CML affects teeth but, like you, was told no link proven.
Good to know you're doing well Martyn!
best wishes
