Extra Chromosome 8

Hi, Does anybody know much about finding extra Chromosome 8's and missing chromosome Y's in Bone marrow asprite? How will this effect CML? Son currently on 200mg of Glivec. Other blood results going okay but I think could probably be better.

Thanks Jayne - I've posted a reply on the children's site.
Does anybody else have any current experience and did it cause them to change treatments?

Hi Michele,
I did a little research and came up with the following.
Trysomy 8 has apparently no prognostic significance in CML although it may arise after interferon and/or imatinib treatment. It's significance is unknown.

It is found in other chronic myeloproliferative diseases polycytemia vera (PV) and idiopathic myelofibrosis but not found in essential thrombocythemia.
It is also found in 10% of myelofibrosis cases with chromosome anomalies, sometimes with +9.
There does not seem to be a prognostic significance.

I remember that a few people have had T8 with CML over the years with no apparent adverse long term effect In responses to imatinib.

Hope this helps...

Sandy

Hi Sandy, Thank you so much. I had almost convinced myself that it meant something so much worst. We have a follow up appointment on Thursday so hopefully the doctors come to the same conclusion. Thank you for some peace of mind.
