What causes eye bleeds ?

Is there a concern ?

What management or first aid issues does one
have for eye bleeds?

A number of people have had this side effect of glivec

What is your experience ?

Hi Sue,
lots of people have this side effect to imatinib... not sure about the other TKI's. It is not of concern usually but it looks pretty horrible.
When I took imatinib I occasionally had eye bleeds..I always bathed my eyes with a few drops of Hypericum and Calendual (called HyperCal which is a mix of the two homeopathic remedies) in warm water.
It is really gentle and very soothing but also heals the broken blood vessels very quickly.
You can get the tincture online as one of the Homeopathic pharmacies. In the Uk there are several but I always use Ainsworth's in London. There is also Helios.
I am sure there would be somewhere in Australia that you could get this remedy. It really does work well and I recommend it for healing any inflamed, sore or broken skin etc.

Hi Sue, I went on Imatinib Oct 2000 {trials} and it was'nt long before I started getting eye bleeds, they were not regarded as a side effect then, but much later Dr told me that the Imatinib caused thinning of tissue in the eye.This was after exaustive eye tests where I was told that my eyes were healthy, nothing wrong with them at all.It looked worse than it was, very often someone would comment on my red eye and I didnt even know it had happened. Sometimes I would get a dry feeling in the eye before it happened, and sometimes you could feel it "go."I have been off Imatinib now for almost 2 years and soon after I stopped taking it, the bleeds stopped. I did have more bleeds in the left eye than the right,{ I kept a record} more than double the amount.There has been quite a lot of discussion about this in the past on this site. I hav'nt been in the internet all that long, and at the time of the bleeds I had'nt got the benefit that this site provides in the way of other peoples knowledge.

I was amazed that you do not take any medication for CML and your PCR tests still come back that you are PCRU

How long were you PCRU before you stopped medication?

Do you still have 3 monthly tests to detect CML ?

Hi sue, I am not quite sure what PCRU means, but I take it it means undetectable, well it was quite a while, but a DR told me it does'nt mean it is'nt there. its just undetectable, and it will return. I still have fairly regular PCR checks, I have recently had my 20th Bone Marrow Biopsy & Aspirate since the 16-01-01, before that I never kept any records.
