The contraceptive pill, Mayday, jabs and Glivec

Hi for all you ladies out there, I am newly diagnosed and have been taking Glivec for 11 days now (so far so good - touch wood). My specialist mentioned that she would like to get me back taking the pill in a couple of weeks.

I was just after the thoughts of other fellow ladies out there. Are others doing the same? I am prone to period pain and heavy periods anyway and taking the pill certainly reduced this pain pre Glivec but I read that the drug can cause imbalance of hormones.

Just a couple of other queries -

Should I be contacting my GP for any specific jabs?

I am being treated at Mayday hospital in Croydon. I know they have links with the Royal Marsden, but I wondered if anyone had any words of advice on this hospital? I really want to feel comfortable and confident with the treatment I am receiving.

Thanks all and sending positive thoughts.

Pesty.

HI there

Welcome to the wonderful world of CML!
Stopping/ changing taking the pill was never mentioned once to me and I have taken it throughout Glivec and now on Dasatanib. I too used to get heavy periods so it was a godsend so fingers crossed it doesn't create a problem!
Best wishes

K

You might want to read up on the latest EMEA guideline'S for vaccines regarding protection against complications of H1N1 flu virus. Look under Newswire.

I am sure the contraceptive pill is not contraindicated for use with TKI's like imatinib/glivec.

Regarding best care... you could ask your doctor about a referral to one of the centres of excellence for CML in London... either Hammersmith Hospital in West London or Kings in South London. You might want to do what other have done and 'share your care' between Croydon and one of the centres I have mentioned.

hope this is helpful,
Sandy

Hi I live in Morden - and am treated at Kings College hospital. The dept is great and the Drs also. Share care should be a possibility if the journey is to much for regular visits. The PCR tests are sent there for processing I think, so I feel better going and giving the sample on site - so to speak -

There is a CML support group that meets about 5 times at year at Kings, you would be very welcome to join us.

As there seem to be a few of us in south London, perhaps we could all manage a meet up and chat?

I was Dx in 2001 so am an oldtimer!!!

Hi all

I have just returned from an overnight stay at the hospital! I had the pneumonia and flu jabs on Monday afternoon at my GPs and by yesterday my temp was up to 39.4! After a quick check to make sure my blood levels were in order and a dose of antibiotics im back home today with the all clear. I think I had better get used to this! :)

'Share Care' is definatly food for thought. I would feel confident I am getting the best advice.

Penny, I would love to come and meet your support group. Please can you let me know the details.

Its great to see you are doing so well!

I would also be up for meeting the South London gang for a chat.

My email is pesty@hotmail.co.uk

Sending you all the best
