Hammersmith Hospital

Hi
I am a patient at the kings for the past one year. My consultant (Dr Ho) left last year. In my previous three visits to the hospital I was seen by different doctors and all of them had different answers to my questions. I am not very happy about my recent visits to the hospital.
I have heard that hammersmith is also a specialist centre. Could someone please tell me about hammersmith hospital? How good is it in terms of patient care and consultants? Do consultants change very often there too? Any help/suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Regards
Shaz

Hi Shaz,

you are obviously disappointed that you dr. has moved on. Unfortunately this happens to most of us over time. I have been treated at Hammersmith since 1998 and have had several doctors who over that time, I have got on very well with. Most of them are still there.... except 2 who have made quite rational career moves. However, it is the infrastructure of HH that is most impressive and although individual doctors to come and go, it is a world renowned teaching and research centre. This means there is a large department which treats many haematological diseases- including non-malignant ones.

However, it has over the time I have been treated there, a core of consultants that stay- hence there are always familiar faces. CML is a particular focus of HH both in treatment and research. Professor Jane Apperley is the clinical director and Prof. John Goldman still works there as Emeritus Professor and is involved in research rather than clinical practice.

I don't like to indulge in the game of my team is better than yours and would cite quite a few treatment centres as pretty good... i.e Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Birmingham amongst others.
My impression of Kings is purely from the outside but I would say that it seems to centre around one person Prof. Mufti- I have heard he is a very caring and knowledgeable doctor. Maybe you could find out where Dr.Ho transferred to and ask if you could be referred if it is not too far away.
The main thing to remember is that you need treatment at a centre with a deep and ongoing interest in CML and research.

Best
Sandy

Dr Ho has returned to Singapore to head up his own CML unit,He was at Kings for fifteen years and will be hard to replace.
Shaz why not go to one of the Hammersmiths surport group meetings? get a feel for the place. If your responding well to TKI's it might a good time to change.
Kings CML clinics are bursting at the seams these days and seeing the same doctor is vital.
I was born at Kings and being post transplant I shall stay at Kings,My consultant at my local hospital is Kings trained and has worked with Prof Mufti in the past so moving to a new team is not a option.
