You are here

back to fitness!!

Hi fellow CML'ers

Just felt like telling everyone i went for a jog tonight, the first time i've felt like since i was diagnosed in 2009 and i'm on 400mg of glivec. Never thought i'd get to this stage and i'm chuffed to bits!!

Keep up the good work with the site Sandy. It gives us strength and hope!

Gary

Hi Gary - hope you keep it up

I have started running over the past few months, since a move to dasatanib.  Whilst on Imatanib I was unable to exercise for more than 20 minutes at a time without having terrible pins and needles in my arms.  But on the new drug I don't have thast problem and my fitness levels have sored at the same time my weight has dropped (10kgs since April).

Looks a great day today (in berkshire) so will be heading out for a run at lunch

Are you logging your runs on anythig like runkeeper?  you can find me at http://runkeeper.com/user/robmargel/

Any other CML runners out there?

I am nearly 42 now and I can say I have never run so much in my life and I feel great becuase of it

Rob

Well done, Gary and thanks for the encouraging words about this site and the work we do.

Best wishes,

Sandy

Hi Rob... good to hear the change to dasatinib has helped towards you acheiving a better level of fitness. Walking/running/jogging has a positive effect on quality of life- especially when taking TKI's. I do hope you can recruit others to join you-

Mayb a 'Jog for Victory over Ph+'  might be a good Tshirt slogan for a 'CMLSg  jogging club'  ?

best wishes,

Sandy

Sandy - sounds like a plan :)

and BTW - my lunch time run in the winer sunshine was great

9.3Kms at just under 11KM/h

Hi Fellow CML'ers,

I just want to re-iterate Sandy's point about keeping fit and hope you don't mind me sharing my experience with  taking TKI;s

Just prior to beng diagnosed in 2010, I completed the Warwick to Kenilworth - 2 castles 10k run. I felt a little tired afterwards ( I put this down to my age - 55)  but was fairly pleased with my time of  57m.30sec. I was shocked to be diagnosed  with CML a couple of months later as I didn;t really have any symptoms and it was only picked up on an unrelated blood test.

I was put on Dasatinib as part of the SPIRIT 2 trial and decided to try to continue with running and other sports. After about a month, I felt much  less tired and had more energy.

I decided to enter the same run this year and was amazed that I managed to complete it in a time of 51m 20 sec. The message I'd like to pass on is that not to let taking TKI's be a reason/excuse for not doing some sport/fitness. Just starting with a short walk and building up gradually will make you feel 100 times better.

Good Luck

Hi all,

I run 10km apx 3 to 4 times a week, but this has reduced recently due to winter weather and colds!

I can do 10km in apx 50 mins.

Im 35 and started around 3 running around months ago.

I was diagnosed in july 2010 and im on 400mg glivec now in remission since jan 2011.

It was hard at first but if you stick with it, it gets easier.

I do get tired afterwards, but I guess everyone does?

Obviously its Important to drink plenty of water, and bananas help with cramps and keeping energy up.

Sometimes After a run, I jump stright into bed, but when Im doing it I dont feel too bad!!
