Eye Bleeds

I am having a problem with eye bleeds, but not in the usual way, when suffering from CML, & taking TKI's.

When I was diagnosed in December 2008, it was following an eye test, & bleeds were detected at the back of my eyes during a routine eye test. At the time of dx my WBC was 298000. Since then my has fallen to 0.005, & at every annual eye test since no bleeds have been found, untill my last test just before Christmas.

Then as before very small bleeds have been found at the back of my eyes. I was at the hospital Ophthalmology department yesterday & they confirmed that the bleeds are still there, & that I must have a blood test to rule out Thyroid, Diabetes, etc but they felt that the bleeds were probably a result of the CML.

I've heard of the usual eye bleeds visible in the white of the eyes, but not of a problem in the back of the eyes. Has anyone else heard of this, or can shed any light on the problem.

Hi Bob.... I assume from the lack of response to your comment that there are not many who have experienced this problem- apart from the usual visible 'eye bleeds' associated with TKI therapy.

I did a quick internet search and found causes might be diabetic retinopathy as you have mentioned. There is a link to information on eye health/diseases below... this is info on bleeding in the anterior chamber of the ey which is called 'hyphema' and is normally caused by a blow or trauma to the eye. I assume you have not been hit with a ball or anything like that.

See another link here which has info on eye bleeds.... this also says that blood diseases can cause hyphema

Also high blood pressure when readings are over 180/120 or higher can cause eyebleeds:

Hope the above is helpful... I think you have done the right thing by getting it checked out at the hospital. Hopefully they will be a ble to rule out diabetes and/or thryroid problems.

Good to hear your bcr/abl ratios remain stable at such a low level.

best wishes,

Sandy

Hi everyone,

this is my first post

I was diagnosed nov 2010 and have been on imatininb 400mg daily

im doing really well, 0.08 pcr at 15 months.

i visit this site alot and I get lots of advice and support from you.

i felt I had to reply to this,as I was diagnosed with bleeding behind the eye aswell

at a routine eye test.

i have since been to the eye specialist at the hospital, who says he has seen this before

with other leukaemia patients.

he didn't seem overly worried as the eye bleeds stop and clot themselves.

I see him every 6 months and the condition hasn't got worse.

i first noticed my sight would go blurry in one eye, and within 30 mins it would clear as the bleeding stops.

i think it's just another little thing we have to live with .

regards roger..................

Hi Bob

I was diagnosed back in September due to haemorrhaging at the back of my eye causing cloudiness of my vision, thus I took myself to the eye hospital and a blood test led to my CML diagnosis.

I recognized the signs as approximately 15years ago I had a detached retina which was caused not through a bump as usual but from a condition called Uveitis, which is a collapsing/folding of the jelly within the eye as it comes away it causes little tears thus eye bleeds into the eye ball.

On my CML diagnosis this was looked at again and I have multiple minor haemorrhages which cause me no problem or discomfort and do not require further treatment, the condition I described above is part of the natural aging process however affects/ is more visible in some people more than others. As described below the clot and heal themselves. Your description sounds similar. Hope this is of some help and is something the specialist may want to check.
