Hi. I'm sorry to hear about your son.

Where do you live? - This is quite important!

Modern TKI therapy, such as imatinib (and to a lesser extent dasatinib and nilotinib) are commonly used as first-line treatment for CML, in the UK at least.

You'll find that this board has lots of knowledgable people on it, and will be able to help you understand what is happening with your son.

David.

Welcome Mario,
I am so sorry your son has been diagnosed with CML. It is heartbreaking for a parent.... but please be assured that he will respond to the therapy that is specifically for Philadelphia chromosome positive CML- (Ph+ CML) The best available therapy are oral medicines that specifically target the abnormal white cells (leukaemia cells). These drugs are called TKIs or tyrosine kinase inhibitors and are extremely effective for the majority - including children. Imatinib (brand name is Glivec or Gleevec if you are in the US) was the 1st of these kind of therapies to be developed (over a decade ago) and a lot of people are treated very successfully with 400mg per day.
There are also 3 other (2nd generation) TKIs that work very well. They are nilotinib (Tasigna) dasatinib (Sprycel) and bosutinib (Bosulif). Each of these tKIs works very much in the same way, but have differing side effect profiles. You will need to talk with your sons specialist CML doctor about which one of the above TKIs would be suitable for him.

It would be helpful if you could say where you are so we can suggest how best you might get support and advice.

Sandy

There is also a Facebook based support group for Children with CML which if you are a facebook user you can join.... see link here:
