weight loss surgery and gleevec

hello everyone, sorry if i will have spelling mistakes, English is not my prime Language.
i got a question about Sleeve Gastrectomy, and i couldn't find any article on Bariatric surgeries and CML.
i am thinking of doing that surgery because i am over weight but i have no idea how it will affect my gleevec taking and absorption. i am living with my cml for the past 8 years, thank god all is well. i am taking 400mg of gleevec and once a week interferon injection.
No one seems to know how it works so I was wondering if you know something; maybe one of you did that surgery while on gleevec?
Thanks
Maya

Dear Maya,

This kind of surgery seems a pretty drastic step to take. I have no experience and hesitate to advise you on this. It might be that apart from the possible problems of absorption of Glivec(Gleevec) through a reduction in the size of your stomach, it might be that you find it more difficult to cope with the most common side effect from Glivec of nausea. This might become a problem because this kind of surgery reduces your ability to eat a large enough meal to make sure you do not feel sick or vomit after taking the drug. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

i hope they will know.
i will let you know if i will find out.
my deep concern is that indeed there will be problems of absorption with the gleevec, in that case i will not do the operation.
i know it seems like a drastic step but its better then diabetes or high blood pressure, and if i will stay at my current weight i am afraid i will get there in the next year or two.

Maya,
Maybe another option would be to change to another TKI? There does seem to be a problem for some with weight gain and therapy with imatinib (Glivec). From what I can gather the newer TKI, bostunib (bosulif) has the least effects on the cardiovascular system of all the TKIs.
It would do no harm to talk with your doctor about the possibility of changing your therapy to bosutinib.

Hello, I know this post has been posted a few years back. But I am just curious if you were ever approved or received the Sleeve gastrectomy?
