low vitamin D and elevated liver enzyms

Hi

I have been suffering from fatty liver since 2000. I have got Gilbert Syndrome as well. My liver enzyms were always been elevated.

When I stated taking gleevec 4 months ago, my liver enzyms started moving down and finally reached within ideal ranges.I was so happy to get a normal liver data. But I have recently getting mild bone pain and blood tests revealed vitamin D deficiency and type A fatty liver.

AST : 45.6 ALT 68.0 , 25 - Oh vitamin D 18.58

Can vitamin D deficiency cause fatty liver with elevated enzyms ? Doctor do not think it is caused by gleevec toxicity. ..

Can gilbert syndrome have any impact on gleevec and CML ?

Any comments ?

Thomas

Hi thomas, how are you?

Vitamin D is related with osteoporosis and with others chronics diseases. It's very common nowadays. If your doctor thinks it's not related with gleevec, you should look for a nutritionist to help with your diet. good luck!

Long time !

How are you doing? Did you get your BMB report?

Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Sorry to hear you have this extra complication. I do not know anything much about GS but I have found quite a good website which you might find some useful information- particularly on dietary advice for GS, and what foods to increase, what to avoid etc.

There is some advice about using Milk Thistle to support your liver. Although you should check with your doctor about this, but in the past we have often heard from members of this forum who suffered from elevated liver enzymes after starting TKI therapy. Quite a lot of feedback suggested that Milk Thistle helped normalise the enzyme counts.

One thing that is obvious from reading the above site is that paracetamol/tylanol is definitely not good to take if you suffer from this condition and can be dangerous. So if you are suffering from bone pain be careful about using these painkillers and again check this with your doctor.

Vit D3 is increasingly thought to be essential for guarding against a large number of health conditions. Personally I take 5000 iu per day (less when I am on sunny holidays. Most research suggests that many people have very low levels of Vit D3, which impacts on overall health. You should make sure that if you supplement with D3 that is in natural form.

I hope some of this helps,
Sandy
