severe fluid retention

Categories:

I have been on SPRYCEL for 6 months at this time.  I have had 2 THORACENTESES  in three weeks.a total of 4.4 liters of fluid was extracted.

shortness of breath has come back and it looks like another extraction will be necessary.  Has anyone else experienced this issue with the SPRYCEL.

Where are you being treated? If it is a specialist haematology centre- and therefore experienced in treatment of CML with TKIs - they should know that one of the adverse events caused by dasatinib (Sprycel) is the build up of fluid in the lungs known as pleural effusion. This is a serious side effect and your treatment with dasatinib may have to be withdrawn until your lungs are clear. The risk of this recurring may be a problem and you may be advised to change therapy to one of the other TKIs such as imatinib, nilotinib, ponatinib or bosutinib- This depends on your individual case and/or where you are being treated.

I assume your treatment with dasatinib has been stopped while you are being treated for pleural effusion with thoracentesis?

See list of dasatinib side effects here:

  • "Fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion) affects 1 in 4 people (25%) – this can be a serious problem so if you are breathless or have a cough contact your doctor or nurse straight away"

Sandy

thanks for your reply

i will be off SPRYCEL for the nexxt 3 weeks and we may be using nilotinibl(TASIGNA)

the fluid came very quickly the last time

the thoracentesis was done at a local hospital in the  cardiology department
