High liver enzymes

Categories:

Hello and thank you to the people behind this forum, what an amazing comfort to know there are people out there with personal experience of CML and an immense treasure trove of knowledge and support.
My husband (diagnosed end of November 2017) is on Imatinib. For his first 5 days he was on Hydroxycarbamide, but once diagnosis was confirmed he started Imatinib. He was on it for 12 days before his consultant suggested he had a break for a week as his liver enzymes were very high: ALT was 165 and Alkaline Phosphatase 871. He's been back on it now for 2 weeks, and the enzymes levels have gone up again, although we don't have the exact figures, from memory we think it was in the order of 130 and 300 respectively and the white blood cells had gone up to 30 from 11 last week. The consultant said give it another week before he will decide what next, as it may prove to be everything catching up after the week off in mid December.

Does anyone have similar experiences and should I seek out some Milk Thistle or just chill and not worry too much?!

Hi Lucy and Mark,

I was diagnosed as having cml on 12 Feb 2016. I started to take Nilotinib 300mg once daily, which was only half the standard dose (600mg). But on 26 Feb 2016, my liver enzyme ALT rose to 255. My doctor stopped the Nilotinib completely. On 18 March 2016, I started again with only 150mg once daily until 6 May 2016. Then 300mg once daily from 6 May to 17Jun 2016. And 300mg in the morning and 150 mg in the evening from 17 June to 14 Oct 2016. Finally resumed the standard dose 300mg in the morning and 300mg in the evening from Oct 2016 onwards. The liver enzyme ALT stayed between 60-80 as a result of this progressive increase in dosage. Recently, my ALT is 29 and is having deep molecular response. So don't worry, your doctor will adjust the dosage and will help to resume the ALT to normal.

All the best,

Emily Law

Thank you Emily, thats very encouraging. Thank you so much for all those dates too, really helpful. We'll tell the consultant on Friday. Just hope too much damage isn't done in the meantime!

Happy New Year to all!

Hi Lucy and Mark,

You are most welcome.

I forgot to tell you that my doctor advised me to stay away from any alcohol while my liver enzyme, ALT was high. In fact, I seldom drink wine, maybe only a cup of red wine per week.  I stopped them completely due to my doctor's advice.

Happy New Year to All!

Emily

Thanks Emily... As it happens neither of us has touched a drop since Mark's diagnosis!! Its seems a small price to pay to let the drugs have maximum effect!

Best wishes, Lucy
