Marijuana/interaction

Good day everybody. I want to ask a quick question here to be on a safe side. I take my medication every morning at 9:30am and sometimes in the evening I smoke marijuana I don’t know if it’s possible to interact with gliveec. A friend once told me that marijuana helps to fight cancer  . Please advise .

I don't know about any interaction between marijuana and imatinib. This link  may provide some useful information.

The issue with the line that marijuana helps cancer patients is a huge over-simplification. Marijuana typically contains around 100 component compounds, but there are two important ones in this area. Tetra Hydro Cannabinol (THC) is the stuff which makes you high. Cannabidiol (CBD) does not make you high, but reportedly has some beneficial effects, such as reducing nausea in those receiving chemo, and reducing muscle spasms in patients with cerebral palsy, and MS. The illegal drug suppliers are concentrating on high THC strains of the plant, for their profit. There is not enough work in big pharma on CBD - because it is a naturally occurring compound it can't be patented and therefore there is no huge profit to be made.

Thanks for the info but do you think smoking marijuana can affect the effectiveness of Gliveec?

I don't know if smoking marijuana would have an impact on the effectiveness of imatinib. I doubt if there is any research available. The link I sent gives an indication on the interaction of medical marijuana and imatinib which is as close as I could get. Sorry

Let me know what you find out. In a couple years when I retire, I’m planning to smoke up a storm.

I think most of us vape. Let's agree on something. Vaping is way less harmful than smoking for all of us. Even second-hand smoke isn't that bad for our health. However, I think we should all respect each other, and even vapers should smoke only in designated spaces for that. Most of my friends and I vape, but we do it cautiously to protect others. We also use premium and quality liquids that don't contain as many chemicals as usual, so they aren't as bad for our health or others. We get these liquids from https://www.thevapecig.co.uk/e-liquid/flavours/mint-e-liquids.html, and I think the world would be a much better place if all smokers did that.

I can't see why marijuana/cannabis would interact negatively with TKI's - at least no more than alcohol - although the liver is rather stressed when processing alcohol and pharmaceuticals in general, but if you are smoking- pref vaping- the liver will be bypassed. Other things - herbs like St John's Wort (hypericum), grapefruit juice, ibuprofen (Neurofen) to name but 3, have been shown to interact negatively with TKIs/Glivec.

If you want to continue to ingest cannabis, you could reassure yourself by keeping an eye on your PCR ratio over the longer term, if there is no change then you could carry on without too much worry.

Remember, smoking tobacco is definitely not good for your health so maybe find another way (vaping? although there are chemicals involved) or preferably smoke without tobacco?

Medical marijuana is usually derived from high CBD varieties of cannabis. Since the 1980s, there have been reports of anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties of CBD. Still, only two indications have been clinically approved for medical marijuana use - reducing chronic pain and nausea in chemotherapy in cancer patients and patients with HIV infection while taking antiretrovirals. I read reviews at https://topgrows.com/best-4x4-grow-tent-review/ and learned that marijuana is a very vulnerable plant. To get a quality product, you must use special tents and ultraviolet lamps.

I asked my oncologist and she said it would not affect the CML or treatment.
