Alcohol and drinking a little more than a “few”

Hi guys

I hope you are all well and keeping safe.

I have guilty moments when I drink alcohol on more rarer occasions but with the weather being lovely and at home having bbqs etc I tend to drink a “few” beers maybe slightly passed Merry or even a little further on occasions.

From what I understand everything in moderation but does it inhibit or change the effectiveness of our drugs or it’s just a case of being kinder to your liver.

Many thanks all.

HI Alexmcpee
As I know alcohol does not interfere with tkis! But we must not over do it because it is bad for the liver! Our liver has a lot of work to do already with our tki. The one that we must not do is drinking alcohol close to our tkis! It is very bad for the liver. Drinking 1-2 beers one a while 6-7 hours away of the tki is not a problem at all. Also you will find older post with this subject!!Maybe will help you even more!

Hi Alex,

I did note a comment from Professor Jane Apperley that because of the fasting requirements that nilotinib might be a bit inconvenient for drinkers but apart from that I have not been able to see anything in the product information leaflets for tkis that suggest it might have an impact on drug uptake.

Like you say be good to the liver and be moderate but I will be having a drink or so as the weather is so wonderful.

Keep safe

John

Besides the nilotinib fasting, there's really no particular issue other than general health to consider.

I am certainly guilty of having more than might be recommended - I think at the moment a lot of people are. But when you're in MMR and doing well there's nothing to consider over and above what anybody else would.

Everything in moderation, including moderation every now and then.

David.

Hi John,

Yes I am on Nilotinib so will make sure I don’t drink during my fast.

And glad to know that it doesn’t appear to reduce uptake of our drugs.

All the best

Alex

Thanks David,

I was almost MMR at 18months @0.118% back in October, I have bloods taken on Monday which will be my 24 month PCR and hopefully I’ll be officially MMR.

Little anxious about going to the hospital during this time, I hate blood taken at the best of time but with all the precautions for COVID it’ll prob be quite surreal.

Yes a little guilty of drinking a bit too much at times. But at the moment with the sun why not!

Take care

Alex

Thanks mate that’s what I thought. Everything in moderation as they say!

Alex
