Pain and bruising

Categories:

Hi, for a long time I’ve been doing really well but in recent weeks I have been getting bad bruises on back and hand, and feeling quite a bit of pain in my lower back and down my legs (like sciatica). The two things in combination worry me. I just recently achieved Undetected, and I continue on 400 mg. Imatinib. There has been no injury to explain these symptoms. It seems odd to me because other than anemia my blood counts are good. What would explain this, could it be related to CML or Imatinib, or something to do with aging (but I’m only 59)? Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi Justine,

you say you have anaemia which might be a clue to the increase in bruising you are suffering. If you increase your daily intake of Vit C this might support your iron levels. It is not advised to take extra iron by supplementation - much better to east more iron rich foods - but supplementing with Vit C daily would certainly not do any harm but it helps make collagen which is an important protein that keeps blood vessels healthy. Lack of Vit K is also indicated in more frequent bruising.

Otherwise you could ask your clinician to help explain why this is happening and what you can do about it.

Thank you Sandy. I have been increasing Vitamin C foods and will see clinician next week. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge with this community. It is nice to have a place to go with concerns.
