Transplantation in CML

Categories:

Hello. I am from Ukraine, I have been suffering from CML since 2016. I wonder if anyone has had a bone marrow transplant in the UK. How was the recovery? How much did it cost?

Yurri - I believe there are a few people who have, but you should really exhaust all other options before making this decision. Obviously I don't know your situation, but there have been a couple of new meds introduced in the last few years.

Fortunately, I am now in remission, taking nilotinib. But I wonder what the situation is with transplantation

I am also interested in how insurance medicine works in Great Britain and the USA

I get medical coverage through my employer in the USA and I believe those over 65 have to pay about $5,000 out of pocket or something like that before medicaid kicks in. An online pharmacy recently opened (stared by Mark Cuban) that has Imatinib (generic) listed as one of their drugs for about $50 USD a month. My hope is that Nilotinib will be on this pharmacies list once it goes off of patent and there are generics available. The cost of the meds is very high in the USA ($8,000-$15,000 per month charged to insurance).

I would reiterate that exhausting all TKI options, even if that means going 'backwards' to Imatinib if the cost is the concern is preferred over proceeding to a transplant.

Is it possible to switch to this insurance plan if you are already sick?

Well it is insurance through your employer usually. Not all employers offer this benefit. The insurance company can't screen you to deny service based on pre-existing conditions.

Hi thereZ In the UK as a citizen this treatment is all free, not sure how it works for non citizens, but in my mind citizens of plant earth deserve the same treatment. It’s about time these divisions and borders went. J am glad to hear you’re in remission and I am sorry for what your nation is suffering. What a life and what a world! Stop I want to get off is what my mother always says haha
