Needing Info on Desatinib

Hi to all. I was diagnosed in 04. Started on 400mg imatinib then went to 800mg the following year. I have still not reached molecular remission so am about to start 100mg desatinib. Am hoping the side effects will be more tolerable than those from the 800mg imatinib! My first question is does anyone take the desatinib dispersed in water? (I can't swallow tablets....psychological I know! ) I asked my consultant who said it was ok, but now after reading the info sheet (which states don't crush or break tablet) I am wondering if she may have misheard my question. I rang the drug company but no useful info given. I rang the hospital pharmacy... didnt get to talk to a pharmacist and was told they would get back to me before the weekend! I need to take the first one today. I was also told not to swallow it with coffee. Has any one been told how long you must wait before you drink coffee? (not being a tea drinker this is an important question esp at breakfast time!!!) I would be grateful for any other tips re desatinib.
Many thanks, Moya

Hi Moya,

What level of remission are you at? Have you reached CCR? or MMR?

What is the reason for switching to Dasatinib? It is folly to switch drugs or increase the dosage to just to get past a CCR response.

Hi Zavie thankyou for your reply. I have been in cytogenic remission for years but not achieved a good enough molecular remission despite being on the 800mgs. At present it is between 2 to 3 log reduction but she would like to see me achieve a 4 to 5 log reduction. I have to say that being quite petite, the 800mg was not easy going. Lately my tummy had been playing up quite a bit. Although the side effects were not the reason for changing, I am hoping that the dasatinib might be easier on the system... fingers crossed!

A very helpful pharacist rang me back and I am now following the paediatric guidelines for dasatinib!

Hi Moya

Not sure about how you should take the tablets but I have been on these for a few months and the side effects are better than Glivec (ie there are less of them!). I was not told to avoid coffee when taking it and I don't seem to have had any problems but eveyone seems to get told slightly different things when they take these drugs.
Hope you get on well with it

Karen

Hi Karen,
Thanks for that good news re side effects.
Have to say that so far (only a few days mind you!) finding dasatinib easier on the system. The pharmacist didn't know about coffee either, but I am taking the tablets with dinner so can savour my breakfast coffee. I am so enjoying the fact that my face and eyes are not half as swollen as they were on the glivec. I dont know if its my imagination but my brain seems to be working a bit better too! That will be a relief to all those around me!
