Local press interviews re: NICE FAD

Dear All,

If any of you are willing to speak with your local press/media regarding the FAD and how you feel about it and the possible outcome should it go forward should the appeals fail. If you feel you wold like to express how your feel, then please contact me and I will put you in touch with the relevant journalists.

Sandy

They are asking for CML patients from the following areas:

Birmingham
Blackpool
Bristol -they have requested an interview for tomorrow if possible!
Cornwall (Falmouth, Truro, Penryn)
Hull
Manchester
Milton Keynes
Newcastle
Sheffield
Shropshire (Telford; Shrewsbury)
South Wales (Swansea, Cardiff etc. – for South Wales Evening Post)
Stoke
Wirral
Wolverhampton
Yorkshire ( for Y. Post)

Hi Sandy

I live in the Lincolnshire Echo and Newark Advertiser area and am being treated at Nottingham, which is covered by the Nottingham Evening Post, if that helps.

Rgds

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have a list of contact details but I am not sure which of the areas you would come under. I will email you privately with the contacts that I think might be interested and if you want you can contact them directly.

If anyone else is interested then please contact me on cmlsupportgroup@gmail.com and I will try to match you up with one of them.

Sandy

I am sure you all have your view on the FAD but for those of you who wish to communicate how you/we feel about the potentially disasasterous situation for UK CML patients in England and Wales should this FAD be upheld (and we are currently drafting our formal appeal against it) you might want to contact your local press.

I have therefore copied the local press contact below with the exact requirements of each  request.

Both Bob and Chris have agreed to contact their local media. Many thanks to both ;o)

We have had some discussions about the general situation should the appeals fail. The point was raised that the Welsh health authority would be expected to withdraw their present agreement to offer all TKI's- including HD imatinib.

As for newly diagnosed patients and those who might develop IM resistance or need to change therapy after the TAG-  patients in Wales who develop resistance or inolerance, might well find themselves in the same boat as those who live in England.

  • Ist chance with 400mg imatinib,
  • 2nd chance with 400mg BID nilotinib.....
  • if dasatinib is needed then a visit to the cancer drugs fund-
  • if unseccessful or if CDF has reached its limit for that year...
  • one of the newer TKI's in clincal trial- or
  • a stem cell transplant if a donor is identified
  • or.....palliative care!
  • Oh sorry I forgot interferon!

As for Scotland- although the SMC would be expected to follow NICE final guidance (TAG)- they do have greater autonomy than Wales, so we are not so sure that the SMC (Scottish medical consortium) would do a U-turn on their present reimbursement decisions re: dasatinib/HD imatinib/nilotinib... including nilotinib for first line use as announced last week.

I don't think a U-turn would go down too well with Scottish citizens and patients!

Should the various appeals against the FAD not be successful, NICE will publish the TAG (technology appraisal guidance) in November 2011.

Hi Sandy

I'm happy to be conatced for the Newcastle area.

Neil

Hi Neil,

I am not sure if anyone did manage to get interviews with Local press. As in my previous post I know that Bob and Chris were going to try to make contact with Milton Keynes and the mid-east midlands areas respectively, but I assume there were no local stories run.

The only one I am sure of is Steven Davies who was featured in the Borehamwood Times with a follow on from an intitial piece they did about him.

I will let you know if I hear any further about local media interest- although it might be best to wait until we hear if NICE will allow us grounds to appeal. That might be a good add on which might interest local papers etc.

Other than that - at least we have the list of contacts for some regional media for future use (which anyone can use at anytime if you think you can interest media where you are to take an interest)-

Hope all is well with you,

best... Sandy
