Magnesium oil

Hello everyone.

I have minimal side effects with glivec 400mg per day for 16 months, but I do get occasional cramp in the hands, feet and neck. I also sometimes feel quite fatigued in the afternoon and sneak a nap occasionally. I'm in remission with a PCR of 0.009%.

I thought I'd give magnesium oil a try because I've heard a lot of good things about it on this website and on the internet in general.

I have to say I feel much better after using it for just 1 week. Cramps are non existent and the naps have stopped! I also feel more alert!

The problem I'm faced with is that I seem (I think) to suffer some side effects from the magesium oil. I think it gives me diarrhea and and it dehydrates me. I wake up thirsty with dry lips and a puffy face after using it the day before. I can also taste it in my mouth when I use it the day before.

I put on about 5-10 sprays a day (not in my mouth, on my skin) :)

Any advise?

Thanks

Firstly, congratulations on your PCR - I'm quite envious, as I've been on Glivec for nearly 2 years and mine is quite a bit higher.

I've been using magnesium oil for some time now, but I haven't found the cramps any less for it.  When I started using it, I began with only one or two sprays a day and gradually increased, so didn't have any trouble with it. Diarrhea is a side effect of Glivec, and dehydration goes along with diarrhea, at least for me.

Hope this helps a little

Olivia

Hi David,

I too would like to congratulate you on your MMR- this is a very good response indeed.

Re; side effects you mention- I assume you did not experience dehydration and/or diarrhea before? As Olivia says these can both be affects attributable to imatinib. I wonder if you need to drink more fluid during the day- preferably plain or naturally carbonated water (according to your personal taste). The puffy face is also a very common side effect of imatinib.

I am not sure about the fact that you can taste the magnesium- do you mean you have a metallic tast in your mouth?... again it might be due to other factors as I have been using magnesium oil for about 12 months and have never had this effect.

I am glad it has worked so quickly for you- it took around 6 months to solve the pain in my joints and general muscle aches. I find that if I do not use it every day then the joint stiffness and muscle aches come back after a while- so I am a convert and make sure I use at least 8 sprays a day.

You could experiment by stopping the oil or reducing the number of sprays and seeing if the side effects go away? Or you can try using magnesium tablets rather than oil. Although I think the theory is that by delivering through the skin it is absorbed into the blood at hight doses and much more quickly as you bypass the usual problems of absorption through the stomach.

Hope this is helpful,

Sandy
